Susie Q’s Kids

We provide comfort bags to kids in need

Mission

Susie Q’s Kids provides comfort bags to kids in need:  sick kids battling an illness, foster kids adapting to a new life, kids in shelters feeling safe, trafficked and bullied kids finding peace, autistic kids exploring new ideas, grieving kids learning to cope with their loss, and suicidal kids finding the hope to continue on.  Each bag provides a soft bear to cuddle, a fuzzy blanket to stay warm, hygiene items to refresh them as they start their new day, inspirational items to motivate them, and journals, coloring books, crayons, games, to make the moments easier to manage.

Program

Susie Q’s Kids partners with established non-profits to distribute our comfort bags to kids in their programs, such as hospitals, shelters, foster care, and agencies that help those grieving the loss of loved ones.  Participants from businesses, churches, local groups, and individuals provide material support and our wonderful volunteers make it happen.

Through our speaking engagements, bag stuffing events, and donation drives, our Kids in Philanthropy approach of “Kids Helping Kids” provides kids with an opportunity to help, focus their efforts on good in the community, and enhance their emotional connection to other kids in need.

We strive to address the physical, emotional, and mental health of kids giving and receiving through our comfort bag program as we provide comfort bags to kids in need, “one bag at a time”, and create some normalcy, relief, and support during what can be an incredibly stressful time for a child.

Together, we can make a difference in the life of a child.

Dr. Mary Welsh is co-founder of Susie Q’s Kids, a 501c3 non-profit, created in honor of their late daughter Susie McBride-Welsh which creates comfort, sensory and grief bags to brighten and inspire the lives of children and young adults in hospitals (health issues), foster care, shelters, and those grieving the loss of a loved one.

Susie Q’s Kids was awarded “Community Partner of the Year” by American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) for her work in the community addressing mental health and suicide awareness. They have also participated In the Barb Smith Suicide Resource and Response Network, Kevin’s Song Conference, and the National Alliance Mental Health (NAMI) Conference and as a Speaker.

Dr. Mary is on the Board of Bereaved Parents of USA (BPUSA) Macomb Chapter, conducted workshops locally and nationally, and facilitates for BPUSA, Compassionate Friends, and New Hope Center for Grief Support. Dr. Mary Welsh, is President of the Sterling Heights Lions Club expanding giving and caring within our community and recently was awarded a prestigious award for her humanitarian efforts in the community. She was also awarded Mompreneur of the Year 2022-23 for her community efforts,

Through her speaking, Dr. Mary focuses on the message of spreading mental health and suicide prevention awareness as well as focusing on the Four Aspects of Positive Reflection. By addressing high school students and youth groups, the kids receive the message and help other kids by assembling hygiene bags. Kids helping kids!

Through our affiliation with businesses, individuals, associations, groups, youth programs, schools, churches, individuals, and grantors, we are able to support our program through financial contributions, bag stuffing events, in-kind donation drives, vendor donations and discounts, participation at charity events, fundraisers, and volunteerism to provide comfort bags to kids in need within our community.

The comfort bags are provided to other nonprofits for distribution such as hospitals/health centers/hospice agencies, shelters, foster care agencies, and those serving kids grieving the loss of loved ones. The following lists some of the organizations and kids in their programs that have benefited from our program.
